ADHD Treatment Center in San Diego

ADHD Treatment Center for Women in San Diego

Choosing a treatment program is one of the most significant decisions a person can make. When ADHD is part of the picture—alongside anxiety, trauma, depression, or substance use—that decision becomes even more important. Finding support that truly understands how ADHD weaves through everything else—your relationships, your sleep, your nervous system, the way you move through the world—makes all the difference.

At Monima Wellness Center, that deep understanding of ADHD and neurodiversity is built into the foundation of our care. Our clinical team and on-site psychiatrist are experienced in recognizing how ADHD intersects with and amplifies other mental health symptoms, and our partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs for women in San Diego are designed to treat that full complexity—not just one diagnosis at a time.

How ADHD Shows Up Differently in Women

For decades, ADHD research and diagnostic criteria were built around boys. The result is that many women and female-identifying people spent years undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or told their struggles were something else entirely. Research published in BMC Psychiatry confirms that gender bias continues to affect whether women get assessed, diagnosed, and connected to care.

In women, ADHD tends to look different than the presentation most people picture:

  • Inattentive over hyperactive. Women are more likely to present with the inattentive subtype, which shows up as difficulty sustaining focus, disorganization, forgetfulness, and time blindness rather than visible hyperactivity or disruptive behavior.
  • Emotional dysregulation. Difficulty managing emotional responses is a particularly prominent feature of ADHD in women, including low frustration tolerance, mood shifts, and rejection sensitivity, and is often misread as a mood disorder.
  • Masking and compensating. Many women develop strategies to keep up and appear functional, which can obscure how much effort daily life actually requires and delay recognition of what is actually going on.
  • Symptoms misattributed to other conditions. Internalizing symptoms are frequently mistaken for anxiety, depression, or personality disorders, meaning ADHD goes untreated while other diagnoses are addressed first.

By the time many women seek treatment at a PHP or IOP level of care, ADHD is often one thread in a much larger picture. Understanding how it intersects with trauma, mood, and daily functioning is part of what makes care at Monima different.

Who Benefits From ADHD Treatment at Monima

Women who come to Monima for PHP or IOP are typically navigating symptoms that are significantly affecting their daily lives—at work, in relationships, or in basic day-to-day functioning. ADHD often plays a role in that picture, whether or not it’s the primary concern. Executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, and difficulty sustaining effort can compound other mental health challenges in ways that are hard to untangle without the right support.

ADHD treatment at Monima may be a good fit if you are experiencing:

  • Mental health symptoms that are affecting your ability to work, maintain relationships, or care for yourself
  • A history of trauma, anxiety, depression, or substance use alongside ADHD or suspected ADHD
  • Difficulty regulating emotions or managing daily functioning
  • Previous treatment that felt incomplete or did not account for the full complexity of your experience

Our Mental Health Treatment Programs

Monima offers two levels of structured outpatient care designed to treat the full picture—including ADHD, co-occurring mental health conditions, trauma, and substance use. Your clinical team will help determine which level of care fits where you are right now, and many women move between programs as their needs evolve.

What's The Difference? IOP vs. PHP

The main difference is time and intensity. PHP provides full-day programming, while IOP offers morning sessions with a flexible weekly schedule. Both programs offer access to the same services—on-site psychiatric care, 2–3 individual sessions per week, neuropsychological testing, and weekly acupuncture—with PHP providing more intensive support for those who need it.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Monima’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) was built for women seeking part-time treatment for moderate to severe mental health, trauma, or substance use issues. IOP is designed specifically for women stepping down from a higher level of care, balancing treatment with work or school, or needing intensive support while maintaining their daily responsibilities. IOP clients attend treatment three to five days per week in the mornings, providing both structure and some flexibility with daily responsibilities.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the highest level of care available at Monima. PHP is best suited for clients with severe mental health, trauma, or substance use challenges that have begun to interfere with daily life and continue to persist despite therapy or medication. Most clients take a leave of absence from work, school, or their daily routines to fully commit themselves to the program. While in PHP, clients will be engaged in treatment five days per week from morning through afternoon.

Does ADHD Treatment Address Co-Occurring Conditions?

For many women, ADHD doesn’t occur in isolation. Research shows that co-occurring conditions are extremely common, and in women, they tend to be internalizing—anxiety disorders, major depression, and substance use disorders among the most frequent. Because these conditions often present first and most visibly, ADHD can go missed or untreated for years while other diagnoses take the lead.

At Monima, that complexity is something our clinical team is specifically equipped to address:

  • Neuropsychological testing for every client clarifies what is actually driving your symptoms before treatment planning begins, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis or incomplete care.
  • On-site psychiatry ensures that medication decisions, if relevant, account for the full clinical picture, including ADHD, mood, and any co-occurring conditions.
  • Integrated treatment planning means ADHD is addressed alongside trauma, substance use, and mental health—not in a separate lane.

What Sets ADHD Treatment at Monima Apart

Several things differentiate care at Monima for women navigating ADHD alongside other mental health concerns.

  • Neuropsychological testing for every client. Before treatment planning begins, each client completes a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation overseen by our clinician, Max, PsyD. This process assesses cognitive functioning, attention, memory, and related factors that inform accurate diagnosis and individualized care. For clients who have been misdiagnosed or never properly evaluated, this is often where clarity begins.
  • On-site psychiatric care. Dr. Sarita Shah, our on-site psychiatrist specializing in women’s and reproductive mental health, provides and oversees psychiatric evaluation and medication management directly integrated into treatment. For clients whose ADHD may benefit from medication support, that conversation happens within the full clinical picture—not in isolation.
  • A small, women-centered cohort. PHP at Monima typically serves around 10 clients at a time, which allows for individualized attention and clinical coordination that larger programs cannot offer.
  • Continuity of care. Monima’s programs are structured as a continuum, with PHP stepping down to IOP so your care stays consistent as your needs change. From there, alumni programming and ongoing virtual meetings keep you connected to your community and support network long after you leave treatment.

FAQs

In girls and women, ADHD most often presents as the inattentive type rather than the hyperactive type. This can include difficulty staying focused, disorganization, forgetfulness, emotional sensitivity, and trouble with managing time. Because these symptoms are less visible than hyperactive behavior, ADHD in girls and women is frequently overlooked or mistaken for anxiety or mood disorders. Many women do not receive a diagnosis until adulthood.

Many people with ADHD find that background noise or familiar audio helps quiet racing thoughts at bedtime, making it easier to drift off. This is consistent with what research suggests about ADHD and sleep: the brain can struggle to settle in silence, and low-level stimulation may help regulate that. However, research also shows that evening screen exposure is associated with more disrupted sleep and increased emotional and behavioral difficulties in those with ADHD. A sleep timer, audio-only content, or alternatives like podcasts and brown noise may offer similar benefits with less disruption to sleep quality, and a treatment team familiar with ADHD can help identify what is driving sleep challenges if they are significantly affecting daily life.

The 30% rule is a concept developed by researcher Russell Barkley, suggesting that people with ADHD tend to develop self-regulation skills about 30% more slowly than their peers. So a 30-year-old with ADHD may still be working on the emotional regulation and executive functioning skills that most people without ADHD developed in their early-to-mid twenties. It helps explain why someone who is clearly intelligent and capable can still feel like they are constantly falling behind or struggling with things that seem effortless to others. The 30% rule is a framework for understanding developmental differences, not a diagnostic standard.

Consistent sleep and wake times, limiting screens before bed, reducing stimulants in the afternoon and evening, and creating a predictable wind-down routine can all support better sleep for people with ADHD. Some individuals benefit from medication adjustments or treatment for co-occurring conditions like anxiety that interfere with sleep. If sleep difficulties are significantly affecting daily functioning, you may benefit from structured ADHD or mental health support.

Yes. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are integrated into mental health treatment at Monima through our on-site psychiatrist, Dr. Sarita Shah. If medication may be appropriate as part of your care, that decision is made collaboratively and within the context of your full clinical picture, including any co-occurring conditions.

Monima accepts most PPO insurance plans, which typically cover PHP and IOP services. Coverage varies by plan, and our team can help verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins. At this time, Monima is unable to accept Medi-Cal or Medicaid.

Yes. If you are concerned about your relationship with ADHD medication, that is something our clinical team and psychiatrist are experienced in addressing. Stimulant misuse and dependence can become an issue for anyone, especially for individuals with co-occurring mental health concerns or trauma histories. Treatment at Monima addresses substance use alongside ADHD and other underlying conditions in an integrated, non-judgmental environment.
