Partial Hospitalization
Program (PHP) in San Diego

Immersive PHP in San Diego, CA

Monima Wellness Center offers an individualized partial hospitalization program (PHP) for women in tranquil San Diego seeking a comprehensive and immersive treatment program for mental health and trauma recovery.

PHP is the highest level of care available at Monima, intentionally designed for women who are ready for a step above basic therapy, psychiatric support, or an intensive outpatient program. Most clients take a leave of absence from work, school, or daily routines to fully commit themselves to healing. Monima partners with Ohana Recovery Residences to provide optional safe housing and a sense of community for all clients.

PHP provides over 30 hours of weekly treatment. Clients engage in group and individual therapy five to six hours per day, five days a week, with a number of different therapy options and expert clinicians best suited to their needs.

What Is A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A partial hospitalization program is one of the most intensive levels of outpatient care available, designed for individuals who require more structured support than what traditional therapy or an intensive outpatient program (IOP) can offer. PHPs provide a comprehensive treatment approach for those who need significant assistance in managing mental health conditions or recovering from trauma.

Participants in a PHP typically engage in therapy full-time, attending several hours of therapeutic sessions each day, multiple days a week. This allows them to receive intensive care while living at home or in a supportive housing environment. PHPs are structured to help individuals fully commit to their recovery by focusing on their mental health and well-being without the distractions of everyday responsibilities, such as work, school, or family obligations.

The goal of a PHP is to provide a safe, supportive environment where individuals can concentrate on healing and making meaningful progress in their recovery journey. By offering a high level of care within an outpatient setting, PHPs bridge the gap between inpatient hospitalization and less intensive outpatient programs.

Who Is a Candidate for PHP?

Partial hospitalization programs are designed for individuals who require a high level of support to manage their mental health or recovery from trauma but do not need 24/7 inpatient care. PHP serves as a middle ground between inpatient and outpatient therapy, offering intensive care while allowing participants to maintain some aspects of their daily lives.

Ideal Candidates for PHP Include:

1. Individuals with severe mental health conditions: PHP is suitable for those experiencing significant symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or other complex mental health issues that require comprehensive care. Learn more about the conditions we treat.

2. People transitioning from inpatient treatment: PHP is often a step down from inpatient or residential treatment programs. It’s ideal for individuals who have completed inpatient care but still need structured support as they transition back to daily life.

3. Those needing more support than outpatient therapy: If traditional outpatient therapy (such as weekly sessions) isn’t providing enough support, PHP can offer the additional care needed. It’s a good option for those who require more frequent and intensive therapy sessions.

4. Individuals with dual diagnosis: People who are dealing with both a mental health disorder and substance use disorder can benefit from the integrated treatment approach offered in PHP, which addresses both conditions simultaneously.

5. Patients in crisis with some stabilization: PHP is appropriate for individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis but are stable enough to avoid inpatient hospitalization. It provides intensive support to help manage and alleviate acute symptoms.

6. Those with strong support systems: Candidates for PHP often have a stable and supportive home environment, allowing them to engage fully in treatment during the day and return home in the evenings. A strong support system is crucial for success in PHP.

7. Motivated individuals: Success in PHP requires a commitment to the recovery process. Candidates should be motivated to engage in therapy, adhere to treatment plans, and actively participate in their healing journey.

Who Might Not Be A Fit For PHP?

  • Individuals requiring 24/7 supervision: Those who are at risk of harming themselves or others or who require constant medical or psychiatric supervision may need a higher level of care, such as inpatient treatment.
  • People struggling with severe substance use: Individuals with severe substance use disorders that require detox or constant supervision to maintain sobriety and safety may need inpatient care before transitioning to PHP.

The key differentiator between PHP and IOP is the amount of time clients spend per week engaging in therapy and with our medical providers. Monima acknowledges that every client has different goals for recovery and are entering treatment at various stages in their wellness journey. As such, PHP and IOP have been intentionally designed to offer two distinct levels of care that address the various medical, physical, emotional, and psychological needs of each individual.

The two locations are only 15 minutes apart and clients experience an immersive, supportive recovery environment with a like-minded community, when staying at Ohana.

Monima limits the size of their PHP program to 12 women as we acknowledge the importance of empowering each woman to have a voice during treatment. Keeping groups smaller than 12 gives clients the opportunity to share as much or as little as they are comfortable with the group. Additionally, groups under 12 ensures all members have ample access to one-on-one help with any member of the clinician team.
