PTSD is widely misunderstood as flashbacks tied to a single catastrophic event, but the reality is both broader and more personal. During PTSD Awareness Month, Monima Wellness Center Clinical Director Kat Grassetti, LCSW, joined Good Business San Diego to reframe what post-traumatic stress actually is, how it surfaces differently in women, and why a body-based approach to healing matters. At its core, she explained, PTSD is what happens when an experience interrupts a person’s sense of safety and the nervous system keeps responding to a threat that is no longer present.

“PTSD really is when we have experienced something that interrupts our feeling of safety in the world, and because of that, our nervous system and our body starts to respond in a way that keeps us safe.”
— Kat Grassetti, LCSW

Grassetti also explored how trauma can show up specifically in women through attachment patterns and interpersonal relationships, where hypervigilance can look like detachment even when the body is simply scanning for a past threat. She walked through Monima’s holistic, body-based treatment, including acupuncture, yoga, sound healing, and hypnosis, all aimed at helping the nervous system regulate so clients can feel safe in their bodies again and begin deeper trauma work. She closed with guidance for anyone supporting a loved one: lead with belief and curiosity rather than judgment.
