Intensive Outpatient
Program (IOP) in San Diego

Individualized IOP for Women in San Diego

At Monima Wellness Center, we believe women deserve more than generic outpatient treatment. Our San Diego IOP represents a revolutionary approach to intensive outpatient care, designed specifically for women navigating depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD, substance use, dual diagnosis, postpartum challenges, PMDD, menopause, and a wide range of mental health conditions—all in a trauma-informed, tranquil healing environment.

We specialize in what many programs overlook: nervous system healing and somatic trauma recovery. Our expert clinicians understand that trauma lives in your body, not just your mind. Through evidence-based trauma therapies, on-site psychiatric care, holistic modalities like acupuncture and trauma-informed yoga, and an empowering community of women, we address the root causes of your struggles—helping you heal at the deepest level and reclaim your sense of self.

Trauma-Focused Clinical Excellence

We acknowledge that recovery is not one-size-fits-all. IOP at Monima is both intentional and individualized, offering evidence-based trauma healing modalities like Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. With 2-3 individual therapy sessions per week and comprehensive neuropsychological testing, you receive accurate diagnosis and truly personalized care—addressing the root causes of your struggles, not just symptoms.

Integrated Psychiatric & Holistic Care

IOP at Monima offers flexible, part-time structure while integrating what most programs keep separate: expert on-site psychiatric care with comprehensive medication management alongside holistic modalities like weekly traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Unlike programs that rely on contracted telehealth psychiatrists, our psychiatrist works directly with your treatment team, ensuring coordinated care. This isn’t just talk therapy or just medication—it’s complete nervous system healing that honors your whole self and supports lasting wellness.

Supportive Community & Safe Housing

Monima and Ohana have partnered to provide clients with optional women-only transitional housing during recovery. Located just a short drive away, clients are surrounded by a supportive and like-minded group of women in a safe, consistent, stable, and inclusive environment that feels like home. With 24/7 staff support on-site, our housing offers a uniquely supportive level of care for those who need it. Whether at Ohana or in your own space, you’ll find the same welcoming, trauma-informed community at Monima.

What to Expect In Our San Diego IOP

Our Intensive Outpatient Program provides comprehensive, trauma-focused care through structured morning programming that includes both group and individual therapeutic support. Here’s what you’ll experience as part of our program:

Accurate Diagnosis from Day One

Every client receives comprehensive neuropsychological testing at the start of treatment. This full evaluation is different from your standard treatment assessment. It ensures you’re receiving the right diagnosis, medications, and therapeutic interventions—preventing the misdiagnosis that many women experience. Your results inform your individualized treatment plan from the beginning.

Unlike many IOP programs that offer one session per week alongside group therapy, Monima provides multiple one-on-one sessions weekly with licensed clinicians trained in evidence-based trauma modalities including Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and attachment-based approaches. This means truly personalized support for your unique healing journey.

Attend 3 hours of group therapy from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM on the days you come to treatment—either three mornings per week or five mornings per week. Each morning includes process groups, skill-building groups focused on healing trauma and managing emotions, and educational sessions on topics like healthy relationships and understanding how trauma affects your brain and body.

Our board-certified psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner work directly with your treatment team in our center—not through telehealth. You’ll meet bi-weekly with our psychiatric provider for medication management appointments during your program hours—no outside travel or coordination required. These sessions include symptom tracking, medication education, side-effect monitoring, and time for your questions. All medication decisions are made collaboratively, with clear explanations so you can make informed choices about your care.

Receive weekly traditional Chinese medicine sessions including acupuncture as part of your comprehensive treatment plan. This holistic modality supports nervous system regulation, pain management, emotional balance, and overall mind-body healing—included in your program at no additional cost.

Your treatment plan is individualized to your specific needs, goals, and diagnosis. Gain understanding of your condition, learn evidence-based coping strategies, and develop skills for lasting recovery through psychoeducation groups and therapeutic activities.

Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program

Our mental health IOP provides comprehensive psychiatric and therapeutic care for women navigating depression, anxiety, PTSD, complex trauma, OCD, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, postpartum challenges, PMDD, maternal burnout, treatment-resistant depression, ADHD, autism, and neurodivergence—and other mental health conditions affecting daily life.

Through evidence-based therapies, on-site psychiatric care with medication management, holistic healing modalities, and nervous system regulation, we address root causes—not just symptoms. We also specialize in understanding overlapping symptoms and the unique ways conditions like ADHD and autism present in women, which are often missed or misdiagnosed by other providers.

Whether you’re stepping down from residential care or need more support than weekly therapy provides, our program offers intensive treatment while you maintain work, school, or family responsibilities.

Substance Use & Dual Diagnosis IOP

Our substance use IOP recognizes that addiction and mental health are deeply connected. We treat alcohol use, cannabis use, prescription medication misuse, and other substances—while addressing the underlying trauma, anxiety, or depression that often drives substance use.

We utilize conscious recovery principles and honor various paths to healing and recovery. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available when clinically appropriate and can be an important part of recovery for some women. Weekly Refuge Recovery meetings are held at our partnered housing, Ohana Recovery Residences, and are open to all female-identifying individuals in the San Diego community. Our trauma-informed approach treats both the substance use and the root causes in a safe, non-judgmental environment designed for women.

Who Benefits From IOP?

Intensive outpatient treatment provides structured support for women experiencing mental health or substance use challenges that require more than weekly therapy but don’t need residential care. You may benefit from IOP if you’re experiencing:

  • Depression, anxiety, or persistent emotional struggles
  • PTSD or trauma symptoms affecting daily life
  • Substance use concerns or difficulty maintaining sobriety
  • Dual diagnosis (co-occurring mental health and substance use)
  • Postpartum depression, PMDD, or maternal burnout
  • Bipolar disorder, OCD, or borderline personality disorder
  • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or in relationships

You might also benefit from IOP if weekly therapy isn’t providing enough support, if you’re stepping down from inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment, or PHP and need continued structure, if you’ve recently completed detox and need therapeutic support for early recovery, or if you’re looking for women-centered, trauma-focused care that addresses root causes—not just symptoms.

If you’re feeling stuck with your current situation or wondering whether IOP might be the right level of care for you, our team can help you explore your options.

Comprehensive Therapeutic Modalities

Unlike other treatment centers, we provide an integrated, personalized, and diverse range of services that set each patient up for a breakthrough in their wellness journey and the chance at a sustainable and life-changing recovery. We offer a variety of unique treatment options and modalities, including but not limited to:

FAQs

IOP meets in the mornings, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. You can choose to come three mornings a week or five mornings a week, depending on how much support you need right now.

Each morning includes group therapy, educational sessions about things like trauma and coping skills, and holistic practices like yoga or somatic work. Outside of morning groups, you’ll also have 2-3 individual therapy sessions each week, plus access to acupuncture and in-person psychiatric appointments.

How long you stay in the program depends on you—your progress, your goals, and what you need. Some people are in IOP for a few weeks, others for a few months. Your treatment team will work with you to figure out the right timeline.

The biggest difference is how much time you spend in treatment each week.

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is our most intensive outpatient option. You’ll attend programming all day, Monday through Friday—think of it as full-time treatment. This is a good fit if you’re really struggling right now and need daily support, or if you’re transitioning home from inpatient or residential care.

IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is part-time treatment. You’ll come in for morning groups either 3 or 5 days a week, then have your afternoons and evenings free for work, school, or taking care of your family. This works well if weekly therapy isn’t enough but you don’t need full-time care, or if you’ve completed PHP and are ready for a step down.

Both programs give you the same quality of care—therapy, psychiatric support, holistic healing—just with different time commitments. We’ll help you figure out which one makes sense for where you’re at right now.

Yes! Monima partners with Ohana Recovery Residences to offer transitional housing with 24/7 staff support for women and female-identifying individuals. Ohana is located just a short drive from our treatment center, so you can easily get to and from IOP.

Housing is optional—many of our clients live at home while attending IOP. But if you need a safe, supportive place to stay during treatment, Ohana provides a healing environment where you’re surrounded by other women in recovery. It’s a great option if you’re coming from out of town, need space from a difficult living situation, or just want extra support during this time.

Monima limits the size of their IOP program to 12 women as we acknowledge the importance of empowering each woman to have a voice during treatment. Keeping groups smaller than 12 gives clients the opportunity to share as much or as little as they are comfortable with the group. Additionally, groups under 12 ensures all members have ample access to one-on-one help with any member of the clinician team.

Yes, every program at Monima has been designed for female-identifying clients. In addition, Ohana welcomes all female-identifying clients to stay at their residences.

IOP includes a combination of group therapy, individual therapy (2-3 sessions per week), and holistic healing practices.

We use various trauma-informed, evidence-based therapeutic approaches depending on the preferences and needs of each individual. These may include therapeutic modalities like Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Processing Therapy, EMDR, DBT, CBT, and others—your therapist will work with you to find what fits your needs best. We also integrate holistic modalities like traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, trauma-informed yoga, and somatic practices that support whole-person healing.

The goal is to give you multiple ways to heal—through talk therapy, body-based work, and holistic support—so you’re not just managing symptoms but actually addressing what’s underneath them.

Learn more about our approach.

Comprehensive neuropsychological testing. We test every client to catch conditions like ADHD, autism, and overlapping symptoms that are often misdiagnosed—especially in women. You get the right treatment from day one.

2-3 individual therapy sessions per week. Most programs offer one. We give you real personalized attention with master’s-level trauma specialists, not just group therapy.

On-site psychiatric care specialized in women’s health. Dr. Shah is board-certified in psychiatry with subspecialty training in reproductive mental health. She understands how hormones, postpartum, PMDD, and menopause affect your mental health—and works directly with your treatment team.

Weekly acupuncture and nervous system healing. True mind-body healing through traditional Chinese medicine, somatic practices, and body-based trauma work—all included in your program.
